Year 8 Internet and Mobile Phone Safety Unit
Lots of people ask me at Open Evening how we make sure pupils are safe in school when they are using the computers. The Year 8 Internet and Phone Safety unit is designed to help you learn about safety. Look at these 3 websites:

I think that the internet is fairly safe unless you hand out email address and all that. You’ll get spam and virusses

My parents don’t worry that much about what sites I visit anyway on our internet because it’s got Parental Contols on (grr)
They don’t mind me using email and msn and bebo but they check it first. It was actually my nan who set up my email address

i would like to comment on the three internet sites were supposed to… erm… comment on.
the first one needs reformatting, as i could not read it easily (a lighter background and darker font is what i recommend)
the kidzsmart one was very impressive and would suit kids well
the last one was very good for both adults and kids and especially to parents who want to write down some ‘ground rules’ for the internet for their children

I think that the second website works best ‘http://www.kidsmart.org.uk/yp/games.asp’ . It’s bright, colourful and eye-catching. It has a lot of imformation about internet safety and diagrams and games to help you to remember all the important information.
The first website http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/edcams/kidzprivacy/index.html was quite blank with no sound though included a lot of information about safety on the internet. It has differant sections for, Kids Teachers and Parents helping them to understand how much internet safety is for children.
The third and last website http://www.safekids.com/kidsrules.htm was quite boring to be honest. It was just a list of rules on internet safety for children, which could be helpfull. I think the website would be more interesting if the creators added more colour and pictures

I thought Kidsmart (the one with the games?) was a site that was easy to understand and got the message through to people with cool videos and games.
The site at the top of the list had too much writing and maybe could have had a brighter website and maybe a bigger range of child-orientated stuff

Go on the Safe Surfing flash on the Kidsmart page it’s great !
It tells you how to keep safe with chat rooms and emails.

I think the first websight was good because it gave you lots of good advice.
I borrow one of my perents mobiles if I need one and I only use the net for homework, my pearents trust me on the net and knows I wont go on any thing I souldn’t .

i liked the 1st web site with the groovy paterns it also had some good advice. i thought the second site was aimed at smaller children and i didn’t even bother to read the last one it looked so boring!! as for my parents the dont care they wont get me a good mobile cos they cant be bothered to get me one.

I think the kidsmart website is the best website because it used a story to tell you how to stay safe on the web and it helpsyou to understand better i like bit where it asks for your help.Ididn,t like the kidsmart website because it was hard to read because it was written in bold,i also didn,t like kids privecy because it was very confusing and it was to dark to read.

Here is another site with tips on how to stay safe online:
http://www.fbi.gov/kids/k5th/safety2.htm is quite bright and colourful and it has a few tips on how to stay safe. This site a would guess is aimed at kids. It uses language such as: ‘tell your parents’ and ‘do not meet anyone you have met online unless you are with a parent or guradian’. I think this site works well and is big bold text so it’s easy to read.

kidsmart was the best 1!!
it had good games and makes you rememder the rules!!!!
The others were a bit boring!!!
safekids was just a load of writing and made me change straight away!!!!
ftc was more for adults!!!

i think the first website (kids privacy) is good because it tells children, adults, teachers and a lot more people about safety on the internet and mobile phones. The only problem with this site is it has a quite a lot of writing in the childrens section so it might be a bit off putting.

I think that mokitown is quite cool coz it helps u learn about road safety but its not really safe beacuse people go on it and say they are younger or older than wat they really are and its really rude wat sum people say lol!!!!!!!!!!!! oh and i am alowed on msn bebo and anythin but i dont really go on the internet alot coz i dont want to get abducted by strange people lol !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Message for Mr Lock. I’ve left some comments in the “awaiting moderation” section for you to see. Someone in DW form is masquerading as another pupil in an attempt to get DWRW into trouble. I’d love to know who this is and think if they are given an opportunity to submit comments again you could use RMTutor to monitor and find out who it is. Shows the benefit of not allowing unmoderated comments on the blog. Also shows the very dangers pupils are supposed to be finding out about. Maybe there would be mileage in talking to them about this as an example of cyber-bullying. What do you think?
